As we all know, there has been a change of plans.
The change was instigated by a pandemic the likes of which the US has not seen in a hundred years. Over 180,000 dead as I write this, and the infection mechanism still seems to be up for (a little) debate. Aerosol transmission, especially fatal if you have underlying conditions.
So we stopped all our plans we had made (see below) and now have made new plans.
The new plans are a driving trip, where we would like to believe that we will have better control over our environment. We are even renting a car so as to eliminate the stress of having to worry about charging up the battery on the Tesla.
Our plans now go something like this:
September 16, drive to Bartlesville, OK and spend two nights at the Inn at Price Tower, a Frank Lloyd Wright building that has been turned into a hotel.
Head north to Hutchinson, KS to visit both a salt mine, and the Apollo 13 command module, Odyssey.
Then to Grand Island, NE, where we hope that the Sandhill Cranes have already arrived for their fall migration.
Keystone, SD, with a view of Mount Rushmore will bring Doreen to her 50th state. I am sure that we will pop a bottle of champagne!
After South Dakota, we are heading to Lander, WY to see Brother Chas and Beth. This will be a great part of the trip. We have not seen them in a couple of years, and we've never seen their place in Wyoming.
I hope we don't outstay our welcome in Wyoming, but we'll follow that with a long drive to Dolores, CO, where we will park for a while and enjoy the high desert and the proximity to Mesa Verde.
In our penultimate stop, we go to Amarillo, TX, home of the 72 oz Big Tex Steakhouse. We will not try that challenge.
Then, as we're getting close to home, we'll stop for a couple of days in Waco, TX. We will undoubtedly stop at the Waco Mammoth Site. And probably take a few photos of that bridge that uses cables from the Roebling Company, of Brooklyn Bridge fame.
Then, to home.
Looks good! Lots of territory.
ReplyDeleteI'm eager to see pictures of the cranes. And the 72oz steak.
